Drop – A Thriller That Shows the Virtual World Can Be More Dangerous Than Reality

By Matija Šerić

There are numerous definitions of mystery, but most authors agree that the term refers to something secretive, elusive, incomprehensible, or enigmatic. A mystery presents a challenge that cannot be solved with conventional logic or classical reasoning. To unravel a mystery, a person must be open-minded, imaginative, creative, and immune to fear. When it comes to mysterious films, viewers must enjoy tension and plot twists. For these reasons, mysterious thrillers are not meant for the average audience. Nowadays, it is not easy to find films in this genre that truly impress, but every now and then, a work of exceptional quality emerges.

Strong Production and Acting Lineup

One of the best recent mysterious thrillers is the American film Drop from 2025. The film was produced by Platinum Dunes and Blumhouse Productions and distributed in theaters by Universal Pictures. Its main creators are director Christopher Landon and screenwriters Chris Roach and Jillian Jacobs. The film features a strong cast led by Meghann Fahy, Brandon Sklenar, and Reed Diamond. Fahy, 35, gained popularity through TV series The Bold Type and The White Lotus. Her contemporary Sklenar is known for Midway, It Ends with Us, and The Housemaid. Diamond, 58, has an extensive career spanning decades.

A Mundane Story Turns Into Something Else

The plot begins very slowly and innocuously, giving little hint of the thriller it will become. The main character is Violet (Fahy), a single mother and survivor of domestic abuse. Having endured years of violence from her late husband, she carries deep psychological and physical scars. After some time, she tries to turn a new page in her life. Thanks to her sister Jen (Violett Beane), Violet decides to return to the world of dating—specifically, online dating. Gradually, it seems luck is on her side. She leaves her son at home with her sister while going on a date at an upscale restaurant atop a city skyscraper. Her date is the successful photographer Henry Campbell (Sklenar).

A Promising Date Turns Into a Nightmare

However, he is late, and Violet interacts with the restaurant staff and other guests in the meantime. Everything seems fairly normal until a sudden event changes everything. AirDrop messages begin arriving on her phone from an unknown person nearby. At first, the memes appear trivial, but they gradually become more serious—and threatening. The sender warns Violet that if she ignores him, her sister and son will be killed. As proof, he sends surveillance footage from her home showing a potential killer. This marks the start of a tense and gripping night. (We won’t spoil the rest of the plot.)

A Blend of Classic Thriller and Technology

Drop is a technological mystery thriller that masterfully combines classic thriller elements—danger, uncertainty, fast pacing, twists, and surprises—with modern technology: SMS/MMS messages. While technology has played a role in thrillers for the past decade, what makes Drop unique is that the digital communication drives the action in the real world. One wrong move could result in the death of innocent people. The tension is palpable, demonstrating how someone on the other side of a screen can hold more power than those physically present. Of course, such a person must be tech-savvy and have accomplices on the ground, but it is fascinating to see the level of influence one can gain through the digital world today.

Real Life vs. Virtual World

The film highlights the conflict between the digital and analog worlds. It is not only a tech thriller but also a psychological and political thriller of high intensity, reminiscent of Hitchcock, keeping viewers on the edge of their seats until nearly the final moment. The story is not entirely dark; there is a consistent touch of humor. Most of the events feel realistic, giving the impression that similar situations could occur in real life—a major strength of this production.

The Fahy-Sklenar Tandem Delivers

Fahy and Sklenar deliver outstanding performances, carrying much of the complex plot on their shoulders. Their chemistry is excellent, and they could easily work together in future leading roles. Drop premiered on March 9, 2025, at the Southwest Film & TV Festival in Austin, Texas, and was released in U.S. and international theaters on April 11. The film had a production budget of $11 million and has so far grossed approximately $28.7 million—a solid performance.

One of the Top Films of 2025

Despite this, Drop remains somewhat underrated, especially within the thriller genre. It is a high-quality film that should be seen by all fans of intense action and cutting-edge technology. It delivers a valuable lesson about the importance of security when using the internet, smartphones, and other technology. The virtual world can sometimes be more dangerous than the one around us.
