Every NBA season brings young debutants to the stage, popular rookies expected to lead the league in the unknown future yet to come. One of the top newcomers, who many analysts predict could win the coveted Rookie of the Year title, is undoubtedly Kon Knueppel. The 20-year-old sensation from the Charlotte Hornets continues to amaze basketball fans every day. On the night from Thursday to Friday, March 26–27, he broke a major record. He became the youngest player in NBA history to make 250 three-pointers in a single season.
How good he is is evident in the pure statistics. At this moment, he has made 253 three-pointers this season, leading the league ahead of elite shooters like Luka Dončić (242 threes), LaMelo Ball (230 threes), Jamal Murray (217 threes), and Donovan Mitchell (214 threes).
A Historic Game
In what has become a historic match against the New York Knicks at home, Knueppel started the game inspired: in the first six minutes, he scored ten points. He finished with 26 points, 11 rebounds, and eight assists (just shy of his first triple-double). He had strong support from his valuable teammates, notably LaMelo Ball with 22 points, six assists, and five rebounds; Brandon Miller with 21 points, eight rebounds, and three assists; and Miles Bridges with 17 points, five assists, and three rebounds. The Hornets defeated the Knicks 114–103 at the Spectrum Center, ending the Knicks’ seven-game winning streak while extending their own streak to five wins.
A Breakthrough Season for the Hornets
Currently, Charlotte holds 9th place in the Eastern Conference with a 39–34 record, just one win behind the 6th place that guarantees a direct playoff spot. This could be a breakthrough year for the team. After four years of waiting, they will finally play at least in the play-in tournament, and if they perform well, they could secure a direct playoff berth, which they haven’t achieved in nearly a decade.
Charlotte – the Perfect Environment for Kon
Much of this success is thanks to Knueppel. In 72 games played, he has averaged 31.5 minutes on the court, scoring 19.1 points per game, along with 3.5 assists and 5.3 rebounds, shooting 48.9% from the field and 43.8% from three-point range. “King Kon,” as fans affectionately call him, was the 4th overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft.
Charlotte’s management, led by General Manager Jeff Peterson, has proven to make an excellent choice in Knueppel. Peterson previously made headlines as GM of the Brooklyn Nets by bringing in superstars like Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving. He demonstrates a strong sense for building a sustainable team long-term, as the Knueppel-Ball-Miller-Bridges quartet brings a winning mentality and positive results.
The Team That Crushed OKC by 27 Points
The Hornets’ potential was on full display on January 5 when they defeated the reigning champions, the Oklahoma City Thunder, by 27 points (97–124) at the Paycom Center. Despite Oklahoma City featuring stars Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Chet Holmgren, and Jalen Williams, Charlotte’s defense limited them to 27 points, while Knueppel, Ball, Miller, and Bridges combined for 84 points.
From Hardcore Gamer to Phenomenal Young Basketball Player
Knueppel was born on August 3, 2005, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He excelled in basketball from an early age, falling in love with the sport in the second grade while playing the popular video game NBA 2K. In high school, he showcased his talent with the Wisconsin Lutheran Vikings. In his final high school season, he averaged 26.4 points, 8.8 rebounds, and 5.1 assists, helping his team achieve a perfect 30–0 record and win the 2024 championship.
A College Basketball Year to Remember
He decided to start his college basketball career at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. He played there for just one year, which became his springboard into the NBA. In 39 games for Duke, he averaged 14.4 points, four rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game. He was named the MVP of the ACC tournament. His three-point shooting, physical attributes (201 cm and 98 kg), pick-and-roll play, and solid defense after only one year of college basketball propelled him to the NBA.
Rookie of the Year Contender
Delighting Hornets fans and neutral basketball fans alike, Knueppel continues to showcase his immense talent in the NBA. According to analysts, he is the main contender for Rookie of the Year, ahead of favored players like Cooper Flagg from the Mavericks, Dylan Harper, or VJ Edgecombe from the 76ers — the first, second, and third picks of last year’s draft.
Elite Shooter with Defensive Commitment
This season has shown that at just 20 years old, Knueppel is more than ready to play at the highest level of the world’s strongest basketball league. His strongest weapon is his fast and consistent three-point shooting, capable of scoring from anywhere on the court. This versatility allows him to play both small forward and shooting guard positions. Beyond his near-surgical shooting precision, he stands out for his basketball IQ — smart passing, positioning, pick-and-roll execution — and a high defensive effort, playing team-oriented defense to stop opposing shooters without seeking personal glory.
Born MVP
Knueppel is often compared to intelligent, precise wing shooters effective off the ball. Comparisons include Dallas’ Klay Thompson for movement and shooting reliability, Orlando’s Desmond Bane for strength and skill, and Denver’s Cameron Johnson for size (2 m, 100 kg) and scoring ability. His appearance in the NBA is a blessing; although not among the flashiest players, his impact is MVP-worthy. If he continues like this, he will become one of the best players of his generation.
