Although not so long ago the mere mention of the year 2026 would have made us think of a distant future that might never arrive, we have now stepped right into it. Day by day, week by week, year by year—and the first day of the new 2026 has dawned. A new year brings new hopes and perhaps new wishes, but old problems remain. A change of numbers has not changed the world we live in—a world of conflict, intense dynamics, change, uncertainty, and great expectations.
Numerous wars, climate change, inflation and stagflation, demographic challenges (overpopulation or low birth rates), socio-political divisions, environmental pollution, poverty, hunger, lack of education, diseases, and nuclear and technological threats are among the most pressing issues for which the world will have to seek answers in the year ahead. There is no doubt that the vast majority of these open questions will not be resolved this year either. The world we live in is a place of imperfection, injustice, and disappointment, and it will always be so. However, humanity must learn to live with these challenges. Although threats are constant, we should remain optimistic and express hope that many wars will end, poverty will be alleviated to some extent, social inequalities will diminish, and the planet will be preserved.
We are already deep into the 21st century, and it is time to feel real progress—not only in technology, but also in social issues. The world should be a place of humanity, empathy, and progress in every sense. The 21st century should bring one enormous positive breakthrough, yet we are still waiting for it impatiently, as it has not happened so far. We must remain optimistic and maintain a positive attitude. Each of us, through our own work, should make the micro-environment in which we operate a better place to live.
