About Me

People often say that writing about oneself is the hardest thing to do. And they’re definitely right. Writing about yourself is ungrateful and difficult—unless you’re an arrogant politician (and there are plenty of those today). However, it’s necessary to know yourself well in order to understand the world around you. In the end, everything starts with us. If we truly know ourselves and have a well-formed personal identity, we’ll also know how to understand and respect others. Everyone deserves respect—proportional to how much they show it to us.

Who am I?

Yours truly, Matija Šerić, is the founder, owner, and editor-in-chief of Actualitica. For those unfamiliar with me, I can introduce myself as a Croatian analyst and publicist with many years of experience in researching and analyzing a wide range of topics—particularly international politics, history, economics, society, culture, and sports. Anyone who followed media such as Vojna povijest, Advance.hr, or Geopolitika.news may have come across my work over the past decade. Actualitica is the platform where I continue my journalistic and analytical journey.

The principles of my work

I write original, objective, and impartial articles that seek to uncover the truth—and I’m not loyal to any particular side. Although there are multiple perspectives from which truth can be observed, truth itself is singular. There are no two or three separate truths. There may be various components of truth, but they all form one unified whole. That’s why I always approach my analysis from a neutral standpoint. I believe that an author who is already aligned with one camp—be it political, sporting, artistic, or otherwise—cannot objectively observe events, phenomena, political parties, countries, or sports clubs. Such an author is a prisoner of their (petty) passions and unwilling to look truth in the eye. Fortunately, I am not one of them. For that reason, Actualitica may be the only truly objective portal in Croatia. Rationality and a cool head are the guiding principles I firmly uphold.

I’m inclined to critique—but not blind to praise

How the subjects of my articles—politicians, athletes, businessmen, and others—are portrayed depends entirely on them: their ideas, and even more so, their actions, decisions, and consequences. If something is good, it will be praised. If it’s bad, it will be criticized. Very simple—though many fail to grasp this. Perhaps my flaw is that I’m inclined to criticism. I believe that people, especially political entities, should not be excessively praised. After all, I’m convinced that more can be learned from constructive criticism than from flattery. But I don’t just point out flaws—I strive to offer well-grounded suggestions for improvement. Perfection doesn’t exist.

Beneath the surface of hot global events

The work of myself and my colleagues is focused on understanding global trends and their impact on individual countries and societies. In my political texts, I place special emphasis on analyzing politically motivated conflicts (both internal and international), interpreting current trends in international relations (especially Cold War 2.0), and highlighting neglected or lesser-known topics—such as the rise of powers like Brazil and India. In societal articles, I particularly address the issue of organized crime that is tearing societies apart. Drug trafficking, human trafficking, prostitution, and alcoholism are major social problems that often remain unresolved due to their political background. These are issues that must be written about.

A cruel world and the need for escape

Economically speaking, the world around us is cruel. For many people, money is the one true god. In my economic analyses, I highlight major social inequalities, injustices, poverty, homelessness, hunger, and other neglected issues. Culture, entertainment, and sport make up a vital part of everyday life in the modern world. People of the 21st century cannot live without music, films, series, or sporting events. I am one of them. In my articles on these so-called “lighter topics” (though many die-hard fans love their club more than their own children), I celebrate outstanding artistic and sporting achievements while also drawing attention to problems—such as the crisis in Croatian football, Manchester United’s decline, or the slow death of the NBA.

In the service of truth, justice, and a better world

Summa summarum, through the Actualitica portal, I strive to encourage the development of critical thinking in Croatia, the Balkans, and beyond. I help readers gain a deeper understanding of events and processes to better comprehend a world that is often neither “black” nor “white.” At the same time, optimism is a trait I refuse to let go of. The world must be viewed through belief in a better tomorrow.
