Best Spring Movies

By Matija Šerić

After a long, gloomy, and harsh winter, spring has finally arrived. Although we can still feel the last chills of cold weather, there’s no doubt that warmer, sunnier, longer, and more pleasant days lie ahead. Spring is the season of blooming, budding, and the rebirth of nature around us, reflected in the birdsong that wakes us up every morning. Easter perfectly fits the theme of new life and victory over death. Considering the awakened nature around us (which should be experienced firsthand), we can enhance the spring spirit by enjoying spring-themed content offered by popular culture. Below, we suggest the best spring movies—films that capture the essence of the season.

“The Secret Garden” (1993)

The Secret Garden is one of the best films of the 1990s. This work shaped the minds of children at the time, the popular millennials. It is a fantasy drama (primarily for children, but mature enough for adults to enjoy) directed by Polish filmmaker Agnieszka Holland. Caroline Thompson wrote the screenplay based on the 1911 novel The Secret Garden by British-American author Frances Hodgson Burnett.

The main character is Mary Lennox, a girl who comes to live with her reclusive uncle in England after the tragic death of her parents in India. Lonely, stubborn, and curious, Mary gradually discovers a hidden, neglected garden, which she begins to restore—symbolically transforming herself in the process. Along the way, she befriends her sickly cousin Colin and a boy named Dickon. Their shared work in the garden brings healing, joy, and renewed hope to everyone. The film’s themes include new life, healing, the magic of nature, and the benefits of family life.

The movie earned $40 million, and according to many (including the British Film Institute), it should be mandatory viewing for children under 14. Its legacy remains strong, evident in the fact that some theorists believe Taylor Swift designed the stage for The Eras Tour 2023–2024 in the shape of the key Mary used to unlock the secret garden. The key-shaped stage symbolizes Swift’s own “secret gardens” of the mind.

“Uncharted” (2022)

Directed by Ruben Fleischer, Uncharted is usually not considered a classic spring movie, as its story spans multiple seasons, but it can certainly be called a spring film. The movie radiates immense energy, positivity, and an adventurous spirit. Uncharted is a cinematic adaptation of the immensely popular video game franchise created by Naughty Dog, one of the most beloved gaming studios ever.

The dynamic plot follows the young and resourceful Nathan Drake, who is introduced to the world of dangerous adventures by experienced treasure hunter Victor “Sully” Sullivan. Together, they embark on a quest for the lost treasure of famous explorer Ferdinand Magellan and Nathan’s brother Sam, facing rivals (a wealthy millionaire and mercenaries), puzzles, and dangers lurking around every corner. Through the journey filled with action, twists, and unexpected events, Nathan gradually discovers the truth and develops his identity as an adventurer. The film earned over $407 million. This inspirational work lifts the mood for spring and can motivate viewers to embark on their own adventures, whether it’s exploring mountains, islands, or faraway lands.

“The Secret of Roan Inish” (1994)

This film is based on the 1957 novel by Canadian writer Rosalie K. Fry. It is a fantasy adventure directed by American filmmaker John Sayles. The story follows Fiona, a girl who comes to live with her grandparents on an Irish island in 1946 after a family tragedy. There, she hears old tales of legendary beings—selkies, who can live as seals in the sea and humans on land. Fiona gradually uncovers her family’s connection to these myths and seeks to solve the mystery of her missing younger brother during a storm at sea, believing he might still be alive.

By exploring and returning to the abandoned island of Roan Inish, the film blends reality and magic into a warm story about family, nature, and unwavering hope. The Secret of Roan Inish exudes a springtime atmosphere, showcasing Irish culture and landscape in an adventurous way while inspiring faith in finding what is lost.

“Big Fish” (2003)

Renowned American director Tim Burton created the fantasy drama Big Fish, adapting Daniel Wallace’s 1998 novel Big Fish: A Novel of Mythic Proportions. Burton was particularly inspired to make the film after the death of his father a few years earlier. The story emotionally explores the father-son relationship. It follows Edward Bloom, a man known for his spectacular and often unbelievable life stories. His adult son, Will, tries to uncover the truth behind his father’s fantastical tales in order to truly understand him before Edward dies.

The plot is rich with deep emotions and themes that resonate especially with those who have lost a parent. A stellar cast (Ewan McGregor, Albert Finney…) and breathtaking natural landscapes contribute greatly to the film’s success. Filmed in Alabama, the movie features unrealistically beautiful rivers, forests, fields, and plains that seamlessly blend imagination with reality. Its scenery evokes spring, and the story radiates a springtime mood. With box office earnings of $123 million, it remains a gem some consider “the best film audiences never watched.”

“American Pie” (1999)

One of the most popular comedies of all time is American Pie (1999). Its popularity spawned three official sequels and numerous spin-offs, but the original remains the best and has become legendary. Director Paul Weitz created a masterpiece for a teenage audience after seeing the success of Wes Craven’s horror film Scream. The movie features excellent chemistry among the cast (Jason Biggs, Natasha Lyonne, Chris Klein, Seann William Scott…) and a fun, slightly taboo story.

The plot follows a group of high school seniors who make a pact to lose their virginity before prom night. The film combines newly discovered teenage sexual desire with the challenges of growing up. The stories touch on first love, friendships, and the realization that adulthood is approaching. American Pie captured the spirit of the 1990s, promoting the idea that anything is possible. The 1990s were, in fact, the golden years of life and freedom in America, which would change after September 11, 2001. The $235 million box office (on an $11 million budget) cannot fully express the film’s impact on society and its influence on subsequent sex comedies.
